The National Research State University of Nizhny Novgorod named after N.I. Lobachevsky, UNN was originally established in 1916 as Nizhny Novgorod People’s University. Later on, in 2009, it gained an honorable status of a National Research University. Moreover, UNN is recognized worldwide. According to QS World University Rankings 2023, Lobachevsky University is in the top 800 of the world’s best universities as well as is in the top 1,500 universities in the world according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023.

UNN consists of 7 institutes – including the Institute of International Relations and World History and the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine – as well as 14 faculties, which celebrate core subjects such as chemistry, mechanics, mathematics and law.

Since 1991, Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod has successfully cooperated with 95 universities and educational centres throughout the world. It also works in close connection with various Russian and foreign companies (Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Yazaki, Cisco Systems, Sberbank).

Тhe university provides learning facilities for its students including a library – with a collection of over two million works – an Innovation Technology Centre, University Press and printing house and five museums ranging from one of Russia’s top zoological museums to an archaeological and ethnographic museum.

In 2014 UNN installed a powerful supercomputer named Lobachevsky, the third most powerful supercomputer in Russia and one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.
