The mission of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “Novosibirsk State Medical University” of the Ministry of Health of Russia is to train highly qualified personnel through the implementation of competitive educational programs that meet professional and educational standards;preparation of graduates, innovatively oriented in various fields of medicine; in the education of medical personnel capable of highly professional performances, to work successfully in modern society, to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills; in the preservation and development of the spiritual, moral, cultural and scientific values of society.
In 1935, by the decision of the Council of People’s of the USSR, a team of teachers was created from the teaching staff of the Novosibirsk Institute for the Improvement of Doctors and the Tomsk Medical Institute in the city of Novosibirsk, which began its first classes in the third year of the newly organized medical institute. The first director of NSMI was Professor I.H. Lifshits. During the Great Patriotic War, teachers and students made a feasible contribution to the defeat of the enemy. In difficult conditions, the training of medical personnel continued, the organization of the work of hospitals was underway, and the advisory work of professors was carried out in medical institutions in the city of Novosibirsk and the region. In subsequent years, the material, technical and laboratory bases got stronger, new faculties, departments and courses appeared. Since 1997, having successfully won the elections, the Institute was headed by Professor A.V. Efremov. The results of the re-certification of the institute in 1998 gave grounds to change its status, and, starting from 1999, the university was called the “Novosibirsk State Medical Academy”.
On November 10, 2005, by the decision of the Accreditation Board of the Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science, the status of the Novosibirsk State Medical Academy was changed to “University”. The decision was approved by order of the Education Ministry of Russia No. 2245 dated December 5, 2005.
February 21, 2008 at the Conference of teachers, staff and students on the election of the director of the state educational institution of higher professional education “Novosibirsk State Medical University of the Federal Agency for Health and Social Development” Professor Marinkin Igor Olegovich was elected director.
In September 2021 Novosibirsk State Medical University celebrated its 86th anniversary. The University has come a long way, has a glorious history, good traditions, highly professional staff.
Currently, NSMU has over 1700 employees. The university has 7 faculties, more than 6 thousand students, residents and graduate students. Classes are held at clinical bases located in the largest medical institutions in Novosibirsk.
The University provides the main educational spheres for training specialists in higher professional education programs, such as: “General Medicine”, “Clinical Psychology”, “Pediatrics”, “Medical and Preventive Care”, “Dentistry”, “Pharmacy”, “Medical Biochemistry”, “Medical Biophysics” “, “Social work”, “Management”.
Employees of NSMU participate in international medical projects, conferences, congresses and symposiums , undergo internships at foreign universities and university professors give lectures at medical centers in the USA and Europe. Graduates of the University work at prestigious universities in Europe (Germany, Belgium, France), Japan, USA, New Zealand and Australia, holding the positions of heads of departments and laboratories.
The scientific and pedagogical potential of the university is a matter of well-deserved pride. The faculty of the university includes 7 academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 15 academicians and corresponding members of the International Academy of Sciences of Higher Education, 59 academicians and corresponding members of various international academies of sciences, 9 employees have the honorary title “Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation”, 5 – “Honored Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation”, 2 – “Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation”, 27 have the honorary title “Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation”, 23 were awarded the badge of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation “Excellent Health Worker”, 1 – laureate of the USSR State Prize .
In total, over the years of the existence of the university, more than 32 thousand doctors have been trained, tens of thousands of practical healthcare specialists have been retrained.
Scientific research at NSMU is carried out within 6 branches of science (medical, biological, pharmaceutical, sociological, economic, philosophical). According to the results of scientific research, more than 20 doctoral and 100 master’s theses are proposed annually in the dissertation councils of NSMU, up to 7 patents for inventions are issued.
The University closely and fruitfully cooperates with many research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences; scientific, educational and industrial complexes have been created and have been operating for a number of years.
NSMU scientists are experts in republican and regional scientific and technical programs, full-time and freelance chief specialists of the health departments of the regional administration and the mayor’s office of Novosibirsk, lead regional scientific and practical societies and associations of doctors, carry out consultative, medical and expert work, are members of the collegium of the health department administration of the region, medical councils, licensing and attestation commissions.
The university actively promotes a healthy lifestyle, many students take part in various sports activities. NSMU has always been famous for its sporting achievements. Today, among the students at NSMU there are 3 masters of sports of international class, 5 masters of sports and 40 candidates for master of sports, 99 first-class athletes. In competitions at various levels, over 226 athletes as students of the university have shown high results in the Universiade of the Novosibirsk Region, performing in 22 sports, including boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, sambo and judo, fencing, swimming, volleyball, basketball, badminton, fitness aerobics, athletics, cross-country skiing, polyathlon, shooting. Since 2008, the NSMU team in fitness aerobics has been a multiple winner of the Siberian Federal District in the nominations “fitness – aerobics” and “step – aerobics” and a finalist of the Russian championships among students.
At the beginning of 2012, Novosibirsk Medical University opened its own ski base, equipped with everything you need. There are academic classes with students and cross-country skiing training. Novosibirsk State Medical University has the best mini-football field in the city.
NSMU is a stable and at the same time constantly developing university that trains medical and teaching staff at the highest level, with its teaching staff facing new challenges every day, which is equally important for medical science, education and clinical practice.
Having stepped over its 86th anniversary, the university is making new plans, looking back, as the past is important not in itself, but as a prologue to the future.
