Dating back to 1724, St Petersburg University (SPbU) was the first institution of higher education in Russia. Today, St Petersburg University is the second major multi-faculty university in Russia, after Moscow State University. The University is ranked among the top 652 Global Universities. It is also known for having educated most of Russia’s political elite as well as for becoming home to 9 Nobel prize winners in Physiology, Medicine, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Literature as well as Fields Medal and Shaw Prize winners.

As for University structure, it is not a campus university. It is made up of many different buildings, comprising 24 faculties and institutes which are further subdivided into departments, and other main structural subdivisions, which include the Sports Department, Rectorate, Gorky Scientific Library, Academic Gymnasium, publishing house, and clinic.

St. Petersburg State University maintains strong partnerships with over 590 universities worldwide. It takes an active part in international academic mobility programs, including Erasmus, Finnish-Russian Cross-border University, Santander Universities, Coimbra Group, Campus Europae, etc. Each year, more than 3,000 international students from 100 countries enroll in SPbU. They are offered a choice from 10 double degree programmes, 24 Master programmes taught in English, German, Spanish, French and Italian.

SPbU campus comprises 21 halls of residence. All accommodation is furnished for living and studying; the halls have laundry facilities, cafes, canteens, shops, gyms and fitness facilities, and ATMs. All rooms have Internet access.
