The University was officially established on 25th January 1941. Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation is one of the top leading educational and research institutes in the sector of aerospace, computer and intelligent control systems. The University offers advanced degree programs under 13 institutes and faculties with 40 departments. The lecturers are experienced, holding scientific degrees and one in five lecturers is a PhD holder.

Degrees awarded by SUAI are appreciated in Russia and abroad. The University is accredited by Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and partners with prestigious organisations such as UNESCO, International Society of Automation, and CDIO Initiative. Among its partner universities, there are McMaster University, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Stuttgart, Lund University, Indiana University, and Rouen Business School.

At the moment more than 600 students from 39 countries are studying at the University as well as its students and staff regularly partake in exchange programs and internships. University provides all its international students with renovated accommodation, and offers a range of facilities, which include classrooms and lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, and various leisure and recreational facilities. All the laboratories and lecture rooms are well-equipped. The dormitory has a perfect location near a vast amount of food stores, cafés, and restaurants with Russian cuisine and international cuisine within walking distance.
