The Siberian State Medical University was founded in 1888 as the medical faculty of the Imperial Tomsk University. Today it is one of the three best medical universities in Russia. SibMed is a large scientific, educational and clinical complex that includes seven faculties where over 5,000 students from 55 regions of Russia and 24 countries study.

The teaching staff of the University consists of 80% of specialists with academic degrees and titles. The students of SibMed have a unique opportunity to study and practice on the basis of their own multi-profile clinics, where annually more than 20,000 patients receive medical care. The professional staff of doctors of SibMed clinics is unique — among them there are professors, doctors of sciences, and PhDs. The clinics are equipped with all necessary modern equipment: ultramodern computer tomograph, MRI, gamma camera, endoscopic and ultrasound complexes, and many others.

The Siberian State Medical University Scientific Medical Library is the only public medical library in Tomsk Oblast and the largest specialized library in Siberia.

The university successfully operates modern level training simulation center, which is one of two centers in the Russian Federation that received accreditation of the European Society of Simulation in Medicine, on a par with the centers of France and Austria.

Within the walls of the university world discoveries in the field of medicine were made, and among the graduates there were over 800 doctors of sciences and professors, 42 academicians, 2 Presidents of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia (Nikolai Burdenko, Vladimir Timakov), Minister of Health of the RSFSR (Anatoly Potapov).

In 2015, Siberian State Medical University became the first medical university in Russia accredited by the Skolkovo Technology Park.
