Volgograd State Medical University (VolgSMU) is one of the oldest universities in the city of Volgograd. It was founded in 1935 as the Stalingrad Medical Institute. In 2012 VolgGMU became one of the largest among medical and pharmaceutical higher educational institutions of Russia, by the number of students of different levels.

Volgograd Medical University trains nurses and mid-level medical staff, doctors of different specialties, pharmacists, social workers, clinical psychologists, engineers working with biotechnical systems and technologies, geneticists, and biochemists.

The university has two departments: one for Russian students and one for foreign citizens. The graduates of the university can continue their education at the faculty of postgraduate professional education (residency, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies), and at the faculty of improvement of doctors – to take retraining and skill improvement courses.

VSMU is also a research and innovation and production center. The Scientific Center of Innovative Medicinal Products is the scientific core of the regional pharmaceutical industry. Today, it is a fundamental of the development of new drugs and substances.
